LA SYNC MISSION

Congratulations to the Revolver team on being successful in their application to attend the LA Sync Mission at the famous East/West Studios.

Keep your eyes peeled for further updates from the event!

WELCOME TO LA

Held at the iconic East West Studios in the heart of Hollywood, this popular industry event aimed at supporting the continuing growth of UK music exports will take place from 12th - 16th September 2022

The five-day mission is a broad-ranging and dynamic mix of panels, site visits, practical sessions, meetings and keynote speakers, as well as an exclusive networking Reception held in honour of our delegates hosted by the British Consul General, Emily Cloke.

The annual LA Sync Mission enables record label and music publishing executives, songwriters, composers, artists and managers to benefit from a unique insight into the operation of the lucrative sync licensing market in the US. The mission also provides delegates a priceless opportunity to meet with many of the key players and decision makers from the world of sync working across the TV, film, advertising and games markets in the media capital of the US - the world’s largest entertainment market.

Having had a Covid enforced break since 2019 we are delighted to resume the mission in person!

Now in its 19th year the mission enables British music companies and individuals to meet with executives responsible for placing music in films including Star Wars, Whiplash, Kong:Skull Island, Moonlight and Dunkirk, TV shows including NCIS, The Good Wife, Stranger Things, and American Gothic, and video games including Assassins Creed, FIFA, Forza Horizon 2 and Rainbow 6. Recent successful sync placements off the back of these sessions include tracks for the multiple award-winning The Shape of Water and for the #1 box office Halloween smash Boo 2: A Madea Halloween, The Star Wars Franchise, Amazon Prime’s Coming 2 America and Netflix's The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina amongst others.

The LA Sync Mission is organised by BPI, DIT and MPA and is open for all UK companies who are actively engaged in Sync.

In June this year, I went to LA on behalf of Revolver to take part in the LA Sync Mission. Fun fact, I’d never actually been on a plane before, so 11 hours transatlantic was a fun beginning to the week, to say the least!

A bit of background first: every year, the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) and DIT (Department for International Trade) organises for delegates from UK Record Labels, Publishing Companies and a variety of other areas in the industry to go and attend a number of panels and social events with LA based Music Supervisors. The panels take place in the iconic Capitol Records Tower on Hollywood and Vine, and as such I was able to walk every day in the footsteps of such musical heroes as Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, and even Lewis Capaldi (who walked past me without stopping to say ‘Hi,’ but I won’t hold that against him.)

Once I’d sorted myself out with a week’s supply of PG Tips tea (which, like the Brit I am, I found within about an hour of waking up on my first day), it was time for the mission to get underway. Panels over the week essentially introduced us to music supervisors from such diverse areas as Serial TV, Unscripted TV, Video Games and Movie Trailers. These panels were an opportunity for us to learn from the supervisors how they approach sourcing music, how best to get our music to them, and perhaps most importantly, what pet peeves of theirs we should always avoid.

The panels culminated in a thoroughly illuminating talk from Andy Bird, former chair of Walt Disney International. He had some excellent advice for our approach to life and work in general, and all present felt more than a little inspired by his words. I got a chance to catch up with him again that night, as the British Consul in Los Angeles hosted a garden party for all present at the Mission, with an after party to follow. This was a great opportunity to network, and as such I came home with pockets full of cards for people I definitely have to hit up for a drink when I inevitably go to LA again.

The week ended with a few trips: I got to visit TBWA/ Chiat/ Day, an advertising agency with a novel approach to the workplace, including a basketball court for workers, who can also bring their dogs to work with them! I also visited KCRW, a radio station where most, if not all, of the DJs are also music supervisors, including Aaron Byrd who had recently worked on the incredible When They See Us for Netflix. Finally, a visit to Saatchi and Saatchi wrapped the trip up, and it was time for my flight home.

Overall, an incredible experience which I won’t be forgetting soon, which put us in touch with a number of music supervisors that we’re hoping will continue to bear fruit for our artists for years to come. - Calum Richardson, 2019
