‘Soulmate’ is an intimate, jazz funk record dedicated to Ted Taforo’s partner, Balou, who in his own words, ‘continues to inspire my growth as an artist and as a person’. The songwriting process on this album is one very much of collaboration; starting with improvisation over the exquisite drum loops provided by Efajemue, to featuring some of Taforo’s best friends, Telamakus and Clinton Patterson who provided keys and vocals/trumpet respectively.

This album is a celebration of the journey that is self-love and acceptance. Taforo has come to understand the importance of being one’s own soulmate, especially since struggling with sobriety and addiction leading up to the pandemic. Now 2.5 years sober and counting, many of the tracks reflect on Taforo’s old habits and control in his life. ‘The Space Between Us’ for example details a hypothetical conversation between Taforo’s past and present self, inviting the listeners into his psyche. This reflection on former selves is also prevalent in the music as Taforo returns to the instrument he first played: the alto saxophone as opposed to his usual tenor and soprano saxophone. Many of the recordings were even performed by Taforo using his actual horn from high school, helping him reconnect emotionally to a younger part of himself, portraying vulnerability within the music that encourages listeners to relate their own experiences.

Ultimately, this music represents gratitude. Gratitude to be living free in Los Angeles, gratitude to have amazing people in his life and gratitude to put a lot of suffering behind him. This record is about finding enjoyment in life and healing from doing so.
