Self Control is a song about grief. I feel like grief is something we rarely speak out about as its such a hard thing to reminisce upon yet its something we all have to deal with in life. It doesn’t have to be through death you can grieve anything you lose be it a friendship, belonging, feeling. A very common reaction to grief is for people to pin the blame on themselves to give short term closure. Yet it's an awful weight to carry and not a healthy coping mechanism.

Self Control is definitely a melancholic song however it bares an uplifting and positive message. “Its not your fault. It’s fine to let it out. So god rest your soul I sure hope that you know that things will be much better now.” It's saying that it's ok to grieve and be emotional. Don’t bottle these feelings behind a wall of blame and guilt. You’re not alone in this.
