Seen by many as a hidden gem of the NWOBHM movement, Witchfinder General were a major influence of sub genre Doom Metal, which is still going strong today, leaving many of the genre’s most famous names owing a debt to the foundations laid out by this band from Stourbridge. The band have never shied away from shocking members of the public, with the artwork for both their full length albums being deemed highly controversial by many, making the fact that the band were named after the horror film of the same name even more appropriate.

The band were only active for a short period of time, 1979-1984, before reforming in 2006 for two years. In that time, under Heavy Metal Records, they released two full length studio albums ‘Death Penalty’ in 1982 and ‘Friends Of Hell’ in 1983, as well as two singles ‘Burning A Sinner’ in 1981 and ‘Music’ in 1983 and one single, ‘Soviet Invasion’ in 1982.
