Annihilation has all the hallmarks of a great thrash metal record; it’s short, it’s fast, it’s loud. But below the surface, there is real song craft in this record. Not only are the technical elements all spot on, but the lyrical content is more than your average thrash record. With so many differing themes, the album could seem disjointed, but the strength of the songs really ties them together. Kublai Khan also were experimenting with acoustic guitars and finger-picking, something Metallica had only just begun to do. This is a thrash album of real quality, and not just another cut and paste job.
