“What do you get when you throw together KISS, The Partridge Family and a fair sampling of Horror/ Sci-Fi “B” Movies?
A Glam Nightmare come to life… Castle Blak!”
So begins the press release for Castle Blak’s debut album, “Babes in Toyland,” and from there the whole thing doesn’t just stay near the knuckle, it breaks the knuckles and removes half the hand. From vocalist Regent St. Claire putting “Amateur Gynecologist” above his vocal and rhythm guitar duties in terms of what he does in the band, through drummer Matthias Montgomery’s life goal “to have sex with Lita Ford… while she’s awake,” the band obviously weren’t afraid to cause a stir. In fact, guitarist Brian Crow’s goal “To marry his illegitimate cousin” is practically normal by the time you get to reading that, and bassist Kevin Mueller’s admission that he goes to the bathroom with the door open is, by all accounts, the tamest of the admissions from the band.
Their debut album, “Babes In Toyland,” was released in the UK through Heavy Metal America in 1985. It garnered enough attention that the band got to record a follow up, which they released the following year (though not through this label or its affiliates.) The band’s releases became incredibly sparse after this point, with their other two releases being in 1992 and 2006, and the latter of these being only a compilation. Whatever happened to the band is unclear, though looking back at the band they were, they probably didn’t go quietly.
